The Manitoba Children's Museum first opened its doors on June 21, 1986 in a 4,000 square foot space in a 90-year-old warehouse on the edge of Winnipeg’s cultural district.

The Museum had three main galleries; The Grain Elevator and Train, The Making Sense Gallery and The Big Top.

The museum’s mandate was to enhance the cultural, educational, social, recreational and economic resources in the community, to provide a "hands-on" museum designed for children between the ages of 2 to 13 years, to teach children more about themselves and the world around them within an interactive learning environment and to foster a better understanding of our cultures: past, present and future.
