The building, known today as the Auberge Saint-Pierre, was built in 1821 and purchased in 1824 by The Quebec Fire Assurance Cie, which it used as its head office. As a matter of fact, before 1818, there were no insurance companies in Canada. People who wanted fire insurance had to buy it from companies in other countries. It is easy to imagine the delays and complications that could ensue.
Over the years, the building underwent many changes. In 1881, hot-water heating was installed; in 1899, the facade was restored and the interior, renovated; however, it was in 1903 that the building underwent the major transformations that turned it into the building it is today. The building grew from three floors to five floors, the main facade was completely demolished and rebuilt, all the floors were redone, and an elevator was installed : in all, renovations of $30,000. Following these changes, the Quebec Fire Assurance Cie obtained a permit from the city to install a stone sign on the frieze of the ground floor, where is inscribed Québec Assurance Building, which inscription moreover is still there today.

Today, this old insurance company has been transformed... its safes have become bathrooms. Yes, the Auberge Saint-Pierre is now a reality!

Being located on two of the oldest streets in Québec, the Auberge Saint-Pierre, with its woodwork and stone walls, seduces through its olde-world charm. Nearby, architectural and historical discoveries await you. To visit : museums, antique shops and art galleries.

To meander through the Vieux-Port (old port) is to travel through four centuries of urban and maritime life.
If you approach from the river side, take Dalhousie, Sault-au-Matelot and Saint-Pierre streets, formerly known as the "Wall Street " of Québec, as most banks were located there. Buildings with magnificent architectures.

Keep walking through Saint-Paul street, the street of antique dealers, right to the remains of the first palace of Intendant Talon. Coming back, linger for a while in front of the other palace, that of the Palais station.
Finally, get a taste of all the colours of the Marché du Vieux-Port (old port market), close to the boats of the Louise basin and changing waves of the St. Lawrence River, between Pointe-à-Carcy and Orléans island.

To cap your meandering, take a seat at a table of one of the best restaurants in Québec city, a few steps away from the Auberge Saint-Pierre.
